Staring with Apple’s statement, this WWDC 2023 (Worldwide Developers Conference) was magical. Every June, Apple offers an opportunity to present and experience its products through a four to five-day WWDC at Apple Park, Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino.
In this WWDC 2023, It took a step further, to hear Tim Cook’s One More Thing with the new product ‘Vision Pro’ after a long time. The ‘Vision Pro’ announced by Apple this time presents a new concept of space. This concept, named Spatial Computing, seems to distinguish itself from several AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) devices on the market. When you think of a typical VR device, you’ll usually think of products like Oculus Quest of Meta. With a VR device on, you would hold the controller in both hands to move objects and feel them through vibration. Apple’s AR device, which allows users to enter the display mode they want without time and space constraints, can be controlled only by hands, eyes, and voice without a separate remote control. However, whereas the Quest’s main purpose is gaming, Apple’s Vision Pro markets itself as a daily driver. Apple claims that you can use it to check documents, watch movies, enjoy face time with friends, and even watch performances by your favorite band simultaneously.
The size of the VR market indeed grows every year, but the number of real users and potential customers is gradually decreasing. This was due to the lack of virtual reality implementation technology and content in the existing market. Apple’s foray into the VR market seeks to change that reality, by introducing original content to the existing VR market such as Apple TV+, and Apple Arcade games. From Meta’s point of view, it is clear that a promising challenger has come for the VR market, regardless of how they value the market share or the expansion of the market pie that it has kept so far.
